How to make a bird feeder camera

If you already have a trusty bird feeder in your garden, then why not add a camera to it?

For wooden bird feeders, you can easily install one of our bird-watching cameras directly onto the mount - angled down towards your feasting friends. Or, for metal feeders, you can place a wildlife camera in a nearby location - pointing towards your desired spot.

However, if that all sounds like too much hassle, you can purchase one of our pre-made bird feeder cameras instead!

Frequently asked questions about bird feeder cameras

What does one need for a bird feeder camera?

For a bird feeder camera you need just three things - the whole setup doesn’t have to be complicated. You need a bird feeder, a bird camera and bird food, with the latter being incredibly important, or your feathered friends won’t bother to stop by.

Where should I place my bird feeder camera?

When it comes to bird feeder camera setup, the best place that you should install your camera is directly in front of your bird seed feeder, in a sheltered spot. Though most bird cameras are weatherproof, keeping them under shelter prevents the risk of damage and the camera lens being blocked by rain droplets.

Why are birds not feeding from my bird feeder?

Birds are very wary of predators, so you need to be very thoughtful about where you place your bird seed feeder and camera. If birds sense that the area is unsafe due to animals such as cats and squirrels, or frequent loud noises, they will avoid the feeder. Instead, place your bird feeder in a quiet location, away from noisy spots and trees.

Your bird feeder also needs to be kept with bird food your flying friends will want to snack on. Fill your bird feeder with bird feed mixes and mealworms, or hang suet cones instead of a metal feeder tube, to encourage birds to stop by.

Should I choose a Wi-Fi bird feeder camera or a wired connection?

The best bird feeder camera for you depends on how and when you want to watch your little friends feed.

Wi-Fi-enabled bird feeder cameras allow you to watch the birds from anywhere by connecting to your dedicated Green Feathers app – simply by having an internet connection. However, if you want to watch the birds feed from the comfort of your home, wired bird feeder cameras are generally cheaper and connect easily to your TV or monitor. Therefore, the best budget bird feeder camera will probably be a wired one.

You may find that wired bird feeder cameras offer a more stable connection, especially if you live in an area with poor Wi-Fi. However, you’ll need to find a way to safely install the wires in your garden, such as by burying the wires or covering them with waterproof plastic tubing. If you don’t want the hassle of installing wires in your garden, the best bird feeder camera for you will probably be a wireless Wi-Fi-enabled one.

Do you need Wi-Fi for a bird camera?

This depends on whether you choose a wired or wireless bird feeder camera. Our wireless Wi-Fi-enabled bird feeder cameras need a Wi-Fi connection, but our wired bird watching cameras don’t need Wi-Fi. Instead, they need a physical wired connection to a TV or monitor.

What is a smart bird feeder camera?

Smart bird feeders cameras connect to a bird feeder camera app (like our Green Feathers app) to offer you live footage at any time, wherever you are. Some smart bird feeder cameras may also be triggered by motion sensors, so that footage is only captured when birds approach your bird feeder - meaning the camera only captures the footage you’re looking for.
