Frequently asked questions about hedgehog houses

How do I build a hedgehog box?

Wondering how to make a hedgehog house yourself? You can build your own DIY hedgehog habitat if you have the materials and a hedgehog house design in mind, or you can follow our DIY hedgehog house tutorial.

However, it’s much easier to buy a hedgehog house from Green Feathers. As hedgehog experts, we know how to create a safe and comfortable hedgehog hibernation box that’s just the right size, so you can be sure you’ve got the best chance of attracting hedgehogs to your property. Plus, our hedgehog habitats are designed to be compatible with our hedgehog and wildlife cameras, making them the ideal choice for watching your new prickly pals in their nests.

Where should a hedgehog house be placed?

Hedgehogs want to feel safe and secure in their habitats, so place your hedgehog house in a quiet, shady and secluded area of your garden. You should also keep the entrance out of the wind and direct sunlight. For example, you could place your hedgehog nest box behind a shed or by a large hedge. Keep it away from busy areas where people will often be walking, such as by doors.

What is the best habitat for a hedgehog?

Hedgehogs are found all over the UK, in both rural and urban areas. They will source out gardens with plentiful supplies of food, looking also for places to nest, breed and hibernate. Open spaces are very unsafe for hedgehogs, with predators lurking for any chance to get them. Growing lots of enclosed shrubbery, installing a hedgehog box and leaving out food will make your garden the best habitat for a hedgehog.

What do hedgehogs eat?

Wild hedgehogs eat a diet of worms, beetles, slugs, caterpillars, earwigs and millipedes, along with a wide range of other insects. However, more infrequently, they will take advantage of carrion, frogs, baby rodents, baby birds, birds' eggs and fallen fruit.

In your hedgehog feeding habitat, you could place plain kitten biscuits or wet cat/dog food. This will not only prevent hedgehogs from the dangers of sourcing their own food, but will invite them into your hedgehog habitat. Make sure to change the food each day, even if uneaten.

How long do hedgehogs hibernate?

Native hedgehogs to the UK usually hibernate for around four months, from November to mid-March. However, this is wholly dependent on the weather, as in mild winters, hedgehogs may remain active well into December – if it isn’t cool enough for them to hibernate yet.

How do I attract hedgehogs to my garden?

If you’re a keen wildlife watcher and/or you want to protect your local hedgehog population, you need to know how to attract hedgehogs to your garden and hedgehog house in the first place. First of all, you need to make your garden attractive to wildlife by providing sources of food, water and shelter – including hedgehog habitats. Dry cat biscuits or hedgehog food are great food sources for hedgehogs. In addition, you should create ‘hedgehog highways’ to allow hedgehogs to safely travel to your garden. These are small holes or gaps in fences, walls or hedges that allow small creatures like hedgehogs to roam freely in search of food, shelter and mates.
